Gold Star Families
Outreach Programs

As a part of our mission at the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation, we sponsor and host outreach programs and events for Gold Star Families. These events are intended to provide opportunities for Gold Star Families to come together, honor their fallen Heroes, and enjoy one another while also raising public awareness about Gold Star Families, their sacrifice, and the sacrifice of their Loved Ones.

Goals of Outreach Programs

After the dedication of each monument The Foundation is focused on keeping each local Gold Star Family community engaged through sponsoring and hosting outreach programs and events.

Events include 5K runs and walks, motorcycle runs from monument to monument, riverboat gatherings, school speeches, as well as events like the Gold Star Families Day at the Ball Park.

These events are intended to provide opportunities for Gold Star Families to come together, honor their fallen Heroes, and build a system of support while also raising public awareness about Gold Star Families.

Involvement of the Community and The Foundation

The Foundation provides a structured process for each type of event and works with the local Gold Star Family committee to organize the volunteers and resources needed.

The Foundation has begun to explore and engage in additional efforts to serve and support Gold Star Families through direct outreach through strategic partnerships. The intent of this program is to provide a clearinghouse of services for Gold Star Families and effectively guide them to organizations that can fulfill their needs. Our partners provide a range of services including Bereavement camps, grievance counseling, home improvement for Gold Star Families in need, therapy animal placement, etc.

The Hershel "Woody" Williams Medal of Honor Foundation will proudly host the 4th Annual Gold Star Family Day at the Ball Park in conjunction with Military Appreciation Night at the Bluegrass World Series.

Since 2016, Louisville Slugger Field has been the site of the Gold Star Family Day at the Ball Park. This is a unique program developed by the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation, hosts 300 Gold Star Family members for a day of baseball, food, community, and fun. In 2018 the Bluegrass World Series partnered with the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation with the goal of supporting the mission of honoring, recognizing, and serving Gold Star Families and their fallen Heroes while raising awareness about Gold Star Families and their sacrifice. By highlighting the Gold Star Family Day at the Ball Park as a part of the Bluegrass World Series the impact of the event was significantly enhanced. This offered an opportunity for Gold Star Families to strengthen relationships within their Gold Star Family community, and demonstrated to Gold Star Families that the community supports them and appreciates their sacrifice and the ultimate sacrifice of their Loved Ones.
