CABOT, Ark. (KTHV) – A group of Air Force Junior ROTC members came out to Friday’s football game in Cabot to raise money for veterans who were lost at war.
The junior members were out talking to fans at the football game in hopes of raising $15,000 to go to the Hershel Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation. The money would go towards building a monument at the State Capitol to honor gold star families.
"What a gold star family is a family who has lost a loved one to a war or combat situation,” Cabot senior and Cadet Major Benjamin Silver said. “We’re still in the very early stages of planning and getting the whole thing started.”
For students like Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Wolter, this foundation rings close to home.
"My grandfather was killed in world war two in 1944,” Wolter said. "Helping raise money really means a lot to me because of that loss."
The AFJROTC members began collecting money at last week’s Cabot football game. They will be fundraising until the end of the season. Wolter said getting out and collecting money at every game is important to honor everyone who has served.
"There are several families in this area that are affected by losses in the military and we want to honor that and be a part of raising money for that," Wolter said.
Even donating a dollar helps out in a big way.
"For every dollar we raise, two dollars will go towards this foundation," Silver said.
So, dollar by dollar, the AFJROTC members hope to reach $15,000 by the end of the season.
"We're going to do well and it really helps drive me," Wolter said.
Silver said getting this money raised is important to honor every veteran who has fallen.
“They all deserve the chance to see that their loved ones are still cared for by their city and state," Silver said.
180 students are a part of the ongoing effort to raise money. The $15,000 goal is part of a statewide goal of $500,000 for the foundation.
